“Are you getting the
best viewing experience out of The
Office?”
Introduction
The Office is a
hit television series that everyone should properly enjoy. Sometimes it is easy
to start a new television series and not get the full experience the show has
to offer. It is just a show, so what all can you possible miss? Surprisingly,
there are multiple ways that you can fail to get the full experience of a
television show that the director intended you to have. Fortunately, I have
watched all nine seasons of The Office a
few different times. This article will help guide you through ways I have
personally sought out to get the best viewing experience of the hit television
series.
Start from the beginning until the end
With new and easier ways to watch your favorite television
series (such as Netflix and Hulu) it is tempting to skip ahead to seasons that
others recommend are the best ones. When I first began watching The Office, I started on the fifth
season without watching the seasons that were prior aired. After I finished the
rest of the seasons, I felt extremely satisfied with the show and recommended
it to multiple people. However, I was unaware that I did not get the full
humorous experience until I re-watched The
Office starting at season 1 episode 1. There was so much background
information that I skipped over the first run through. Some confusing parts of
the show became clear after I watched it from the beginning. Plus, there were a
lot of jokes that was based in reference to scenes that occurred in prior
seasons. If I did not watch it from the beginning, I would have missed funny
puns, inside jokes, and overall lost the respect to see how far certain characters
have developed. One of the main reasons I did not initially start watching the
show from episode one is because I was told that the first few seasons were “boring”
and uneventful. I’ll admit that season one was not a humorous as the others
that proceeded. But, it was much beneficial for me to get the background
information that season one had to offer.
Pay attention to character development
The best TV shows are the ones in which you forget that you
are watching something fictional and give the show a sense of reality. In
reality, people change in multiple ways. Some people mature as time goes on,
and some people change the way that they due to prior events. The Office characters develop as well as
the seasons go on. When Jim Halpert first made his appearance on the show, he
acted like a young male that just got a salaried position. He could act
childish and goofy a times. He pranked Dwight Schrute on multiple occasions. As
seasons passed, he became to develop a more mature role. He did not completely
get rid of the jokes and pranks against Dwight, but he minimized it. Jim stepped
into the role of becoming a loving husband and father of two children. With the
additional responsibilities of being a husband and father, we see a character
change within Jim towards the end of the series. Another example is the
character change of human resources Toby Flenderson. When Toby first arrived at
the Scranton branch, he followed closely to the rules and regulations of the
company. He was also very active in enforcing those rules and regulations as
his job position required him to. After Toby was getting undermined by his
staff and Michael Scott as the branch manager, he tried to reprimand people.
Over a few seasons of the show, Toby realized he had little enforcing power as
HR of Dunder Mifflin. This caused him to stop caring as much and letting a lot
of things go overlooked. There was a point in the show when he did not even
report Dwight Schrute for firing a loaded gun in the workplace. Character developments
adds humor and a sense of reality to the TV series.
Re-watch certain episodes
There were multiple times when I had the show playing at my
apartment and I was not giving it my full attention. Being a busy college
student, there were a lot of other things going on the time. Sometimes I will
be doing homework while the show was playing and not giving it my full
attention. There were other times a watched the when I was extremely tired or
even slept through while the show was still playing. It is important to
re-watch the episodes that for whatever reason was not given the full attention
required to get the best viewing experience. When I re-watched episodes, I
found that there was much that I missed when I initially watched it while other
activities were taking place.
Watch it with a friend
Watching the show with a friend or watching the show at the
same time as a friend is helps a lot with getting the full experience. By doing
this, you can discuss your favorite scenes and episodes. You can also ask your
friend questions about the show that was unclear to you and your might have the
answer. Watching and discussing the show with a friend is somewhat similar to a
“book club” buy you are viewing a story instead of reading it. When I found
more friends that also watched the show, I became more involved within it and
was able to see how others viewed the show as well.
Conclusion
Those are a few different ways I have come to personally discover
a better way of viewing The Office.
Skipping over episodes is the quickest way to lack the best viewing experience
that the show has to offer. Being patient and letting the show develop episode
by episode is a great way to that full on viewing experience. Doing events with
friends is always something fun to do. Watching the show with a friend will add
some additional insight to any TV series you choose to watch. Give these tips a
try and get the most out of The Office!
